Yo Maskala is the most important cultural and religious festival for the Gamo people of Arba Minch and the surrounding highlands. It marks the Gamo New Year and coincides with the Ethiopian celebration of Meskel, commemorating the discovery of the True Cross. The festival is a magnificent display of Gamo heritage, featuring the iconic 'Yo' songs and dances. Families gather to celebrate reconciliation, community, and the promise of a new year. The centerpiece of the event is the lighting of the Demera, a massive bonfire.
