The park is named after the Maze River that flows through it, creating a diverse ecosystem that supports a wide range of wildlife. The park's primary significance lies in its role as a sanctuary for the endangered Swayne's Hartebeest, a subspecies of antelope found nowhere else on earth but Ethiopia.
